Donald Lakey . . Contributed By Evelyn Engel MartinOn Wednesday, November 11, 1998 Don was a very good friend of mine. We were sweethearts in junior high, high school and junior college. We dated on and off for nearly ten years. I remember Don as a sweet, gentle, sensitive guy. He liked to write poetry. He also liked to play the harmonica. He was a tall, handsome young man. It has been 32 years since he died. I still mourn for him at times. I loved him very much. He was my first love. I remember the day we met. It was in junior high. I was in the eighth grade and he was in the seventh. We met in the movie which the school showed during the lunch hour. Don took me to my graduation dance from junior college. He was home on leave from the Army. He had already spent one tour in Vietnam and decided to volunteer for a second term. The newspaper account of his death said that during a conflict he was checking on the status of his men without regard for his own safety. He was awarded the Bronze Star posthumously. He was an only child. I can really sympathize more with his parents than in the past as I lost my only child (a son) in 1985 when he was 15 years old.

Catherall, Ph.D. (Psychology) and former combat soldier with the Marine Corps in 1967-68. "Back From the Brink" was published by Bantam Books, 1992 and is a family guide to overcoming traumatic stress.
