Ivan Febo-Betancourt, SGT E-5, 101st Airborne . . Contributed By Ken GrullonOn Monday, May 25, 1998 My Uncle Ivan volunteered to go to Vietnam (he had a very high draft number) and stated his tour of duty on 12/13/67. He was with the 101 Airborne in Quang Tri. On 04/06/68, the day before he turned 19, he died of multiple fragmentation wounds at Quang Tri. We have his letters, but I would very much appreciate talking to anyone who served with Ivan, or know of the events in early April, 68 in Quang Tri.
It was so long ago.
Thirty years and more.it was so long ago. Being a teenager at the time, I am/was a contemporary of these men and women. You would think that time would make the memories dimmer. I was lucky not to have lost a loved one or even a close friend. I only know of one young man I went to high school with who died in Viet Nam. He was a terrific guy. I heard part of the memorial service at The Wall today. One speaker remarked upon the disdainful welcome that returning service men got. I was against the war, but I guess a reasonable type of person. I realize that it was government policy I was against and not the young men and women who went to do their duty and what was asked of them in Viet Nam. They faced something that I was not asked to. But my real point is that now that I am middle aged, I am even sadder that so many young lives ended before their time. The remeberance I have of all those who lost their lives and served their country intensifies with each year. God Bless them all.
